B4 Hydroformylation of Petrochemical- and Oleochemical Starting Materials in Micellar Solvent Systems in a Continuously Operated Miniplant with a Highly Efficient Catalyst Recycling (completed)

Sub-Coordinators: Prof. Dr. Reinhard Schomäcker, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens-Uwe Repke

State of the art

The hydroformylation of short alkenes has already been established as an important standard process in industry for producing aldehydes, which is carried out in a two-phase approach. Due to the decreasing solubility of alkenes with an increasing length of carbon chains in the aqueous phase, the hydroformylation of higher olefins is not yet established in industry.

Research goals

In B4 a fully automated mini-plant has been built, to conduct experimental investigations on a continuous process for the hydroformylation of higher olefins with rhodium catalysts in multiphase systems. The aim is to validate laboratory results on reaction and separation in an early stage. Additionally, gaining a deeper understanding of phenomena which occur during continuous operation with internal recycles and which are impossible to observe in a lab scale is of interest. Therefore, the analytical instrumentation will be extended and used together with model based strategies, aiming for a robust continuous operation. In detail, operating data will be used for model identification and validation of single units. Afterwards soft-sensor approaches and advanced process control strategies for start-up and robust continuous operation will be developed and tested together with subproject C4. Following the concept of the modular plant design, alternative processes and apparatus designs will be installed.
